Breastfeeding Specialist

Responsible for providing breastfeeding education and support in either in a group setting or one-on-one to WIC participants. This position requires current IBCLC status. This position is 100% client services including breastfeeding promotion and support, breastfeeding assessment, nutrition education, and referrals to other health and social services. This position is under the direct supervision of Director, Breastfeeding Promotion and Support.

Reports to: Director of Breastfeeding Promotion and Support


1. Must be an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with at least 3 years’ experience.

2. High school diploma or General Educational Development certificate (GED) required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

3. Certified WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) is preferred.

4. A working knowledge of lactation among various cultures with an emphasis on Hispanic culture.

5. Effective teaching and communication skills.

6. Knowledge of WIC policies and procedures (State and local).

7. A working knowledge of the WIC WISE software and hardware is preferred.

8. Has the ability to work with groups and individuals to promote breastfeeding in the community.

9. Thorough working knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, and contemporary general office practices and procedures

10. Math skills enough to prepare routine spreadsheets

11. Basic leadership skills.

12. Computer skills in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.), electronic health record systems, and database systems.

13. Typing/data entry skills enough to meet production requirements.

14. Effective verbal and written communication skills to communicate clearly and effectively with patients and others.

15. Very effective oral and written communications skills including public speaking experience.

16. Effective work organization skills.

17. Ability to work effectively as a team player.

18. Ability to be flexible and work in a changing environment.

19. Sensitivity to the different cultures represented among members and staff.

20. Demonstrated ability to listen and communicate with others in a professional and caring manner including sensitivity with individuals from diverse cultures and lifestyles.

21. Demonstrated ability to set priorities for tasks to work effectively despite interruptions and under minimal supervision. Self-starter, reliable and dependable.

22. Demonstrated proficiency with WIC MIS within three months of attending training session(s).

23. Fluency in English (speak, read and write).

24. Fluency in Spanish, preferred.

25. Ability to solve problems and make routine recommendations.

26. Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality about health care and other patient/client information.

27. Current California driver’s license, appropriate insurance coverage and a driving record acceptable to the NEVHC’s insurance carrier (if required to drive on the job).
