Chief of Staff to CMO

Position Summary

The Chief of Staff (COS) to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a new position in 2022 designed to support the CMO in her duties and functions. Responsibilities include assisting with organizing and strategic decision making, coordinating and vetting external opportunities and relationships, assisting with communication including emails, media, attending meetings with or on the CMO’s behalf and taking notes, performing post-meeting follow through, and preparing CMO for upcoming meetings, media engagements, and presentations. External facing activities are a higher priority for the COS but anticipate internal facing responsibilities will also require support and may grow over time.

The ideal candidate will be an extremely organized strategic thinker and relationship builder with excellent communication skills, time management and project management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support the CMO in daily tasks and duties, with a proactive, strategic approach
  • Coordinate and prepare CMO for external meetings, ensuring calendar and travel are well managed
  • Attend select meetings with or on behalf of CMO and perform follow through communication both internally and externally
  • Coordinate select internal meetings; keep meetings focused and organized
  • Vet external opportunities utilizing a proactive, strategic approach; direct requests to CMO, CEO, Communications, Policy office, executive assistant, and other departments; vet requests received through email, social media direct messages
  • Provide support for speaking and writing opportunities which includes assisting with presentation development/design, accompanying materials for presentations such as descriptions, learning objectives, pre and post questions, slide preparation, coordination with external organization. Writing projects include drafting brief articles, blogs, letters
  • Ensure CMO is prepared for on-camera media and interviews, working closely with AFSP’s Communications/PR Team to ensure external media outlet and CMO have all necessary information in advance
  • Liaise with AFSP team leaders for execution of cross-departmental projects
  • Assist CMO office which oversees $20M+ budget and expenditure for AFSP’s program areas
  • Serve as an extension of the CMO to maintain relationships with external organizations and agencies as needed
  • Other duties/projects as assigned by CMO

Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of executive support, communications and/or strategic function roles
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business Administration, Project Management, Psychology or similar areas of focus preferred. MBA/MPA ideal
  • Chief of Staff Certification is a plus
  • Alignment with AFSP’s mission and goals
  • Sensitivity to the needs of chapter and national volunteers, survivors of suicide loss, suicide attempt survivors and those with mental health lived experience, and the important roles they play in helping to meet AFSP’s goals
  • Extremely versatile and flexible, dedicated to efficient productivity
  • High energy and ability to create and sustain enthusiasm among others
  • Demonstrated strength of character, able to excel in a challenging and changing environment and during periods of rapid growth
  • A work history of ethical behavior, personal integrity and respect for others
  • A willingness to travel both domestically and internationally
  • Subject matter experience preferred
Salary and Benefits:
Annual salary range: 85-100K
22 PTO (vacation, sick, wellness and personal days) your first year of employment (5 additional days 2nd year)
