The YWCA of the City of New York (YW-NYC) is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. We are a multiracial women’s social justice organization dedicated to addressing issues that emerge at the intersection of race, class and gender. Founded in 1858, the YW-NYC is the first YW in the United States and part of an international movement of YWs worldwide. We currently serve 1,500 New York City school children by providing leadership and advocacy training for young women through our high school Girls Initiatives and Out-of-School Time (OST) programs for elementary and middle school students in culturally diverse communities in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The YW-NYC is currently looking for a Group Leader.

Job Description:

Group Leader at the YWCA After-School Program at PS 329 School (Part Time).
The YWCA of the City of New York is seeking caring, creative, responsible and reliable group leaders. We are looking for individuals with experience working with elementary school students and who are committed to positive youth development. Group leaders must be passionate about engaging youth and serving as a positive role model. Key attributes of a successful Group Leader is the ability to manage complex and detailed tasks simultaneously; effectively integrate program philosophy and management policies consistent with organization’s mission and goals; utilize of analytical skills and creativity to implement program initiatives; and the ability to work collaboratively and independently as necessary with key stakeholders and partnering organizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure classroom management and a positive learning environment
  • Assist and support specialists in engaging students in hands-on activities
  • Ensure the safety of students during program transitions and while class is in session
  • Provide homework assistance and tutoring
  • Maintain responsibility for program supplies and proper use of all facilities
  • Ensure the engagement of students during program activities
  • Submit required program documentation daily
  • Communicate effectively with the Program Director and colleagues
  • Communicate effectively with school-day staff and with parents
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Perform other duties as needed


  • Associates/ Bachelor’s Degree in Related Field or commensurate experience
  • Commitment to promoting YWCA’s social justice mission, educational and youth development philosophy
  • Minimum of 21 years of age
  • At least 2 years of experience working with elementary school students in an After-School Setting
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong capabilities in math, reading, and other general academic studies
  • Excellent classroom management skills

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.00 – $20.00 per hour


  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday


  • Childcare: 1 year (Preferred)


  • First Aid Certification (Preferred)
  • CPR Certification (Preferred)
