K-8 Guidance Counselor

The Social Emotional Learning and development of our Scholars, their families, and our staff is essential component of their experience at New World Prep. Guidance Counselors are part of the Student Support Services Team who coordinate the academic and social emotional learning at New World Prep. We are looking to hire several guidance counselors to serve our Scholars in kindergarten through 8th Grade.

Responsibilities of the Guidance Counselor:

School-Wide Counseling Focus:

  • Provides individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental, preventive, and remedial needs of students both inside and out of classroom. Each student must be seen at least six times per school year.
  • Conduct structured goal-oriented counseling sessions in systematic response to identified needs of groups of students
  • Consult with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students
  • Assist parents in addressing school related problems and issues. Refer students and their parents, as needed, to appropriate specialists, special programs and/or outside agencies
  • Collaborate with staff in the development of the University Prep Advisory/Morning Meeting curriculum developing academic, career, personal, social and emotional literacy skills, goals and plans
  • Use data to document the results of strategies and interventions that are used to improve student academic performance
  • Facilitate Professional Learning Community Planning Time for Kid Talk Sessions
  • If needed to assist in the arrival, breakfast, lunch, in-between class transitions, enrichment, and dismissal, making sure students are always where they are supposed to be and ensuring a professional school culture at these times
  • Participate in Student Led Conferences, Back to School NIght, Board Meetings as necessary and other school wide events.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

Staff Support

  • Act as a resource to teachers in their instructional practice, especially as it relates to issues of discipline, relationships with students, classroom management, and school culture
  • Support teachers to hold all students to high and consistent behavioral expectations that nurture the school’s mission and values.
  • Assist with professional development planning and implementation regarding positive student behavior
  • Assist teachers, students, and parents in the effective creation and implementation of individual behavior plans
  • Proactively circulate throughout classrooms, hallways and other common areas during the day, to gain valuable context on student behavior and help support positive school culture
  • Assist with State Exam Preparation and Facilitation


Education and Experience

  • NYS Certification Required
  • Bi lingual – English/ Spanish preferred
  • Experience working or commitment to work in an urban setting
  • Strong written, grammatical, presentation, and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and team-oriented
  • Ruler and Restorative Practices experience highly desirable.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,000.00 – $90,000.00 per year
