TEGNA and WXIA in Atlanta is hiring a Reporter/ MSJ for Atticus, their national investigative unit. Atticus has a proven track record of outstanding journalism that has saved lives and changed laws. In 2016, TEGNA innovated around investigative, digital docuseries work and created the Atticus investigative unit. The pilot process was a huge success, providing stations across TEGNA groundbreaking investigations.

The unit continues to receive national recognition including two National Murrow awards for innovation, the National Walter Cronkite Award, and the National Association of Broadcasters President’s Service to America Award. Atticus journalists will create content for stations across TEGNA that will appear on our streaming apps and linear newscasts.

The debut series “The Triangle” (2016), is a raw look at the dramatic rise in heroin-related deaths in American suburbs, which helped to elevate the national opioid conversation and is now used as a regular part of addiction awareness and education.

“Charlie Foxtrot” (2016-17), which drove policy changes for how the U.S. Military provides treatment and care for veterans suffering from PTSD.

“Little Man Lost” (2018), which traced the disappearance of a two-year-old boy in Idaho.

“Selling Girls” (2017), which investigated sex trafficking of children in America, drawing the attention of the U.S. State Department, which highlighted the series to encourage journalists from other nations to cover this important global issue.

“Mother’s Matter”” (2018), which explored the high death rate of American mothers from pregnancy related causes.

“A Different Cry” ( 2022) is the latest series from the award-winning team exposing the dramatic rise of suicide of young black boys.

Responsibilities:

  • Write powerful stories, series, docuseries for streaming and on air.
  • While assigned a photojournalist, candidate should have the ability to shoot and edit when necessary.
  • Gather news content following TEGNA’s Principles of Ethical Journalism at all times.
  • Be open to innovative approaches to storytelling and investigative work.
  • Skillfully use social media and digital tools to research, discover and distribute content.
  • Enterprise story topics that would benefit all TEGNA stations.
  • Be available to travel occasionally to major news events in TEGNA markets.
  • Challenge the norm.

  • Outstanding writing skills
  • Experience writing/producing powerful news stories
  • Innovative spirit
  • At least 5 years’ experience in local news
  • Travel: Rarely: less than 10%
  • Work Environment Set: Office: normally performed in a typical interior/office environment
  • Physical Demands Set: Sedentary work: Involves sitting most of the time; walking, lifting, bending, standing, etc.
