Position Summary:

This is an exciting full time research scientist opportunity in Momentive’s Performance Additive Business, Plastics & Electronics segment, for developing new solutions for plastics and composites materials. The Global Innovation Center where this position will sit is moving in the near future to Pearl River, New York in Rockland County.

Job Description:
The candidate will be responsible for:
  • Executing research projects with minimum guidance
  • Independently designing and carrying out experiments in lab environments
  • Analyzing, summarizing, and communicating results to cross-functional teams
The candidate will have the opportunity to:
  • Work closely with other senior scientists and engineers
  • Frequent communication with cross-functional teams globally, including, marketing, sales, and production teams
  • Direct interface with external customers

Additional Details:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. with 0-5 years’ work experience or M.S. with 3-7 years’ work experience, majored in chemical engineering, chemistry, or materials science, especially with experience in composite/polymer technologies
  • Experience in plastics and composites processing (extrusion & injection molding, etc.) and testing
  • Strong understanding of composite structure-property relationship
  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and communicate experimental results clearly
  • Sound IP awareness (e.g., patent filing)
  • Full awareness of chemical and lab safety
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven track records of innovating or commercializing new products
  • Work experience with customers or technical services
  • Broad knowledge and experience of plastics, including various thermoplastics and thermosets; and their related properties, including, mechanical, processing, flame retardancy, anti-scratch, etc. is highly desired
  • Experience and expertise in polymer synthesis and characterization tools, including, GC, GC-MS, NMR, FTIR, DSC, Instron, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, bend, stoop, crouch, twist, turn, lift. and move about the facility. Walking, walking on irregular surfaces and balancing will be required. Reaching, feeling, finger movement, grasping, hearing, sight and the ability to speak clearly will be required. Regularly, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling up to 50 lbs. Ability to wear personal protective equipment; ability to pass a fit-test and wear a respirator is required for most positions. The environment for this position is a laboratory setting. Candidates should be able to adapt to a traditional business environment.
